Dermody Properties Grants a $25,000 Annual Thanksgiving Capstone Award to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada - 2020

We are honored to announce the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN) as a recipient of our annual Dermody Properties Thanksgiving Capstone Award. FBNN will receive $25,000 to support its core food program, providing 75,000 meals throughout the community.

FBNN is a nonprofit organization and a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, focused on providing emergency food services to families throughout northern Nevada and the eastern slope of the sierra in California. Through a network of more than 145 partner agencies and direct service programs, FBNN serves more than 106,000 people each month.

Every year, senior management at Dermody Properties selects the recipients for the annual Thanksgiving Capstone Award with the overall goal of helping nonprofit organizations address the increased need experienced during the holidays. This year, Michael C. Dermody, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Dermody Properties and Doug Lanning, Chief Financial Officer at Dermody Properties, have specifically designated FBNN as a recipient.

“Every year, the Thanksgiving Capstone Award brings our company, our executive team and our communities come together to help those organizations who are truly making an impact in the lives of people in need,” said Dermody. “At Dermody Properties, this award has become a tradition to help ensure the communities in which we do business have adequate resources. With the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that now, more than ever, these gifts are critical to people in need. We are pleased to continue our support of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and recognize its efforts to fight hunger and food insecurity within our most vulnerable populations.”

Like most nonprofit organizations, FBNN faced many operational challenges this year due to the pandemic. In March, they saw a 30 percent increase in the number of people being served at food distribution sites around the region. In order to continue to fulfill its mission of assisting families with food insecurity, while also protecting recipients and volunteers, FBNN converted nearly all of its distribution sites to Mobile Harvest – a drive-through model. This is a direct service program that allows the organization to distribute perishable foods such as fresh produce, bread, and dairy into high-need neighborhoods. Each month, Mobile Harvest visits more than 45 sites throughout Reno/Sparks, as well as rural northern Nevada and eastern California.

“The Food Bank of Northern Nevada plays a pivotal role in this community to ensure that families and children have access to adequate and nutritious food,” said Lanning. “Along with its partner agencies and thanks to countless volunteers, the organization is making huge strides to combat hunger in northern Nevada, and we’re honored to support them in their efforts.”

The Dermody Properties Annual Thanksgiving Capstone Award is uniquely directed each year by the executive management committee of Dermody Properties, which includes Chairman and CEO Michael C. Dermody; President Douglas A. Kiersey, Jr.; Partner and Chief Capital Officer Kathleen S. Briscoe; Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Kauchak; Chief Financial Officer Douglas Lanning; and Partner and Chief Investment Officer Timothy Walsh.

Dermody Properties has selected five additional recipient organizations and will award $5,000 each to the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry in Elmhurst, Ill., St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, Ariz., GRACE in Grapevine, Texas, Feeding America of Riverside and San Bernardino in Riverside, Calif. and the American Heart Association in Newark, Del.
